This introductory course invites students to explore what it’s really like to teach while gaining hands-on experience. Through engaging readings, discussions, videos, and interactive activities, students learn how schools work and explore big questions about equity, access, technology, and what makes teaching effective. Students build foundational skills in lesson planning, examine culturally affirming practices, and explore how educational systems can both support and challenge meaningful change. Learning goes beyond the classroom as students work with small groups of elementary students, building confidence and reflecting on their own growth as learners and leaders. Throughout the course, students strengthen key Portrait of a Graduate skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability, initiative, and problem-solving, while developing the professionalism needed to work with diverse learners. The course emphasizes curiosity, effort, and growth, making it a good fit for students with diverse academic experiences and learning styles. It is a strong starting point for students interested in careers in education, social services, leadership, healthcare, or anyone eager to make a positive impact on others.

Purposeful Leadership is a hands-on course for students who want to lead with confidence, purpose, and impact. Students identify their personal strengths and build the self-awareness, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that colleges and employers value across all fields. The course uses a service-learning model in which students work in teams to investigate real-world issues, design solutions, and take meaningful action. Through discussions, inquiry-based research, and experiential learning, students develop initiative, ethical decision-making, and a leadership mindset that prepares them for roles in business, education, public service, healthcare, and beyond. This course is an excellent choice for students interested in leadership roles in any field, such as business, education, public service, healthcare, law, engineering, and the nonprofit sector. Students enrolled in the honors level of this course take on additional responsibility by leading learning activities and helping organize and guide service-learning projects.
