Grade Level Assemblies
Last week, Mrs. Chen Fein, Mr. Murphy, and I met with students in grade level meetings. We framed our expectations for students through a discussion of our core values. We also reviewed our emergency procedures, including evacuation procedures, with students. This week, we will begin to practice our emergency procedures in an effort to prepare students and identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.
Mission Statement and Core Values
Last year, the members of the MSMS community worked together to develop a mission statement and identified our core values. These are values and aspirations that we expect all members of our community, including students, educators, family members, and community members, practice and model.
Marshall Simonds Middle School provides rigorous learning opportunities that encourage all to develop their intellectual and creative potential. All in the MSMS community are inspired by the diversity that enriches both our school community and the world beyond. Everyone is challenged to grow socially, emotionally, and academically while promoting human dignity, acting with compassion and integrity, pursuing passions and interests, and seeking ways to improve our community and beyond.
We Persevere through challenges in spite of obstacles
We have Respect for human difference
We act with Integrity by doing the right thing, even when no one is watching
We welcome and celebrate all members of our Diverse community
We are Empathetic, we try to understand how others feel and respond with kindness

Thank you to everyone who has promptly returned the beginning of the year forms. If you have not yet completed and returned the forms, please do so at your earliest convenience.
In past years, Marshall Simonds Middle School has offered an after school Homework Clinic. Homework Clinic is a quiet, supervised place for students to complete homework. This is a fee based program and we are anticipating the cost to be $180.00 for the school year (this could vary based on enrollment in the program) If you are interested in having your child participate in this fee based program, please complete this brief pre-registration form. Please respond by Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
Picture day has been scheduled for the morning of Monday, September 23, 2019. More information about ordering will be shared with families once it is received from the photography company, Geskus.
Here are a couple of resources to help understand the new schedule and support your child at home.
This document has the time table for classes, including lunch times, and a table that shows the rotation of classes for each day.
Semester Planner (first semester)
This long-term planner lists the calendar days school is in session, what day in the rotation falls on which calendar day, and the rotation for that day. This is a great tool for your child (and you) to know when to bring the instrument to school or what days Physical Education classes meet!
After School Activities
Marshall Simonds Middle School is proud to offer a variety of after school activities for our students. In the coming weeks, we will share information about the different activities that are offered. Students should listen carefully to the morning and afternoon announcements as sometimes information is shared directly with students.
Marshall Simonds Middle School is excited to offer students the opportunity to participate in cross country after school this fall. Thanks to the hard work and support of Mr. Shaun Hart, Burlington High School’s Athletic Director, students will have the chance to practice with other MSMS students and compete with other schools. Please see below for additional information.

Our coaches are seeking new and returning recruits for this year’s FIRST Lego League challenge. Research and design solutions to real-world challenges surrounding city planning and urban design. Work with team members to program autonomous LEGO MINDSTORMS robots that manage obstacles and complete missions that interest you. All the while having fun with MSMS students of all grades in an after school setting built on cooperation, learning and designing a better future. So get your team together to see if you have what it takes to be the next great City Shaper! The informational meeting has been announced the first week of school and has taken place after school Tuesday September 10th, however if you child is still interested, permission slips are available at school. Spots on the team are limited.
