The school year is in full swing! At the beginning of the year, there is a lot of information that we want to share and communications have been going out weekly. Now that we have settled back into the routine of school, you can expect our communication to come out about every two weeks. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the main office, Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Chen Fein, or Ms. Perchase.
Back to School Night- Grade 7 & 8
Wednesday, September 18, 2019
We are excited to provide families of students in 7th and 8th grades the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and learn about the curricular program that Marshall Simonds Middle School offers. The night will begin at 6:30 pm and end at 8:30 pm. We will send a more detailed overview of the evenings in a separate email.
Picture day has been scheduled for the morning of Monday, September 23, 2019. Students were sent home with flyers this week.
At Marshall Simonds Middle School, the safety and wellbeing of our students is our number one priority. Throughout the year, we will communicate the emergency procedures for different situations and will provide students opportunities to practice these procedures. Last week, we completed our first evacuation drill. We were impressed with how quickly and quietly our students exited the building. In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to conduct evacuation and other emergency response drills. Our intention in sharing our procedures for different situations and practicing drills with students is to reduce the worry that some students may have and help students be prepared for different situations.
21st Century Learning Conference
Much has been said about how quickly the world is changing and how educators are preparing students for a future that is unknown. We are working hard to adjust our practices to make sure that our students have the skills necessary to be productive citizens in an unknown world. In addition to preparing students for an unknown future, we are hoping to connect the content and skills to real world applications, in order to ignite passion, excitement, and enthusiasm for learning.
This year, we are transforming three school days into 21st Century Learning Conferences for our students. Our vision is to provide students with alternative learning activities where they are able to participate in a variety of authentic learning experiences that demonstrate how what they learn on a daily basis is applied in a variety of different contexts. In addition to allowing our students to explore different career experiences, we would also like to provide them with some “real life” training, and would like to offer them the opportunity to learn life lessons like personal finance, well being, and self-care.

We are hoping to partner with local businesses and organizations to expand our offerings to students. Please email Mrs. Boari at firstname.lastname@example.org if your business or organization would be willing to volunteer on this day or be a community sponsor. We will share more specific information with interested parties.
In past years, Marshall Simonds Middle School has offered an after school Homework Clinic. Homework Clinic is a quiet, supervised place for students to complete homework. This is a fee based program and we are anticipating the cost to be $180.00 for the school year (this could vary based on enrollment in the program) If you are interested in having your child participate in this fee based program, please complete this brief pre-registration form. Please respond by Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
School Council- Call for Volunteers
The Marshall Simonds Middle School Council is composed of the principal, parents, teachers, and community members and serves to improve our school. The Council is responsible for formulating a school improvement plan that addresses the needs of students and acts as an advisory group to support the change process. We currently have one spot available for a sixth grade family member who is willing to serve on the Council. The meetings will take place about once a month on Tuesdays and will start at 3:30 pm. If you are interested in learning more about the School Council or would like to be considered for this role, please email Cari Perchase at email@example.com before Friday, September 20, 2019.
After School Activities
MSMS Chamber Orchestra 2019-2020
Ms. Schauer firstname.lastname@example.org
Chamber Orchestra is a great option for students who feel ready for a challenge. We will perform at the same concerts as your classmates, but simply learn some extra, more challenging music and play at an even higher level than your in-school orchestra. Chamber Orchestra will meet this year on Mondays right after school in the Auditorium. We will rehearse until approximately 3:05, at which time students can either be picked up on the Winn Street side of the building, or take the late busses. All interested students should be prepared to play a short solo song and a scale for Ms. Schauer after school on Monday, September 23. Please see Ms. Schauer to schedule this.
Homework Helpers is a program that involves high school students helping middle school students with their homework. The high school students log their hours and get community service credit for college applications and resumes. If interested, please email Dr. Murphy at email@example.com. Please feel free to email with any questions or concerns. It is up to you to make the connection and work out the details after you get the names.
