Do you love sports and want to learn how businesses can make money involving sports? Do you want to understand what is going on in the show Shark Tank? Maybe you just want to understand the basics about business? Take Intro to Business and Marketing and learn about the world of business and receive an introduction to the scope and importance of marketing in the global economy. Introduction to Business and Marketing begins by introducing students to the role of business in the lives of individuals, consumers, workers, and how they impact our economy and leads students through global business, economics, marketing, advertising, social media and product development. Along the way, current events in sports, entertainment, finance and all aspects of business will be discussed to further students' understanding of business and marketing. Emphasis is placed on oral and written communication skills, mathematical applications, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Instructional strategies include computer/technology applications, real and/or simulated occupational experiences, the stock market game, and projects focused on the marketing functions through the classroom incorporating various industries. Students will generate their own questions and investigate independent topics in business and will enjoy working creatively both independently and collaboratively to solve problems in class. This is a DECA qualified class. This is an introductory business course that provides the framework for pursuing additional business courses. Honors courses within the Business Program are accelerated for students who are serious about future career paths in each subject area. The anticipated workload will include but is not limited to, additional homework assignments, comprehensive research, and in-depth writing assignments such as marketing portfolios and business plans.

802 (Honors) Marketing Management, DECA

Prerequisite: 90 or better in Intro. to Business and Marketing Class AND 1 year participation in DECA or Permission of instructor
Expand your classroom beyond the walls of Burlington High School. In this course, students learn the skills needed to consult with businesses and then use those skills in a capstone project to assist a business in their marketing or operations. In our diverse, global economy, the business world faces a competitive environment that demands creative, innovative, market driven solutions to new problems and new opportunities. Students will work cooperatively with the business community on business projects and events which will prepare them to live and work as productive citizens in a changing global society. Their classroom assignments will include active engagement through the use of technology and practices that reflect current business procedures. Students will develop skills in market research, problem solving, data analysis and sales that foster critical thinking to create a marketing plan that will be presented to professionals in the business community. Businesses selected by the student can be in any field including sports, finance, retail, hospitality, medical or business services. Students will gain experience utilizing and developing leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills using both collaborative and independent problem solving. Students will compete their business plans in a DECA competition.
