Prerequisite: 
For EL students at a foundational WIDA level and/or recommendation from EL and content teacher and guidance counselor

The EL Content Area Courses are designed for English Learners in grades 9-12 with limited English proficiency (Foundational Level, as per WIDA scores) and/or content skills and knowledge.  These courses provide students with the language and skills required to access the core academic content areas, while preparing them to enter standard (CP) high school level content courses. Course work will be customized in content and difficulty for each student, based on ability and need.  In the student schedule, these courses are shown with the course titles as such:  

ELL Math, ELL Science, ELL History, and ELL Literature.

980 (FOU) English as a Second Language 1 Instruction 
Full Year Course 5 per/7 day cycle  – 5 credit

Prerequisite:
None

English as a Second Language 1 (ESL 1) is a 5-credit course offered to all students who have a language other than English as the first language, and who demonstrate limited-English proficiency.  Instruction focuses on English Language Development (ELD) and interactive learning which assists students to develop both basic interpersonal communication skills and academic language proficiency, in the four language domains of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In addition, WIDA standards and a national shift in ESL theories on pedagogy towards more academic access now informs ELL coursework.  
 

Enrollment in ESL is determined by the following criteria:

1. A language other than English is spoken at home

2. Results of English language proficiency tests (to determine eligibility and level placement)

3. Teacher recommendation

981 English as a Second Language 2 (CP) Instruction 
Full Year Course 5 per/7 day cycle  – 5 credit

None

English as a Second Language 2 (ESL 2) is a 5-credit course offered to all students who have a language other than English as their first language, and who demonstrate limited-English proficiency.  Instruction focuses on English Language Development (ELD) and interactive learning which assists students to develop both basic interpersonal communication skills and academic language proficiency, in the four language domains of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In addition, WIDA standards and a national shift in ESL theories on pedagogy towards more academic access now informs ELL coursework.  

ELL Students in ESL 2 are given more challenging work, to mimic the rigor of mainstream high school coursework, in order to fully prepare the ELL for a transition to a standard schedule, and full access to the general curriculum.
