It is hard to believe that my first year at Marshall Simonds Middle School has come to an end. I want to thank you all for welcoming me into the community. While I am looking forward to the summer months, I am also looking forward to the 2019-2020 school year.
Thank you for the privilege of being a part of your child’s life this year!
Dismissal, June 20, 2019
Students will be dismissed at 10:15 am this morning.
Team Assignments and Placement
Because of the complexity of creating a new master schedule and the late approval, students will not be given their team assignments for the next school year, as they have gotten in the past. We will send schedules to students in early August.
Assistant Principal Announcement
This spring, with the support of the School Committee, we were able to restore the second assistant principal position at Marshall Simonds Middle School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. We are pleased to introduce Mrs. Jennifer Chen Fein as the newest member of the Marshall Simonds Middle School Administrative Team. Mrs. Chen Fein has recently completed a full-year master’s program in educational leadership. Her program included a residency component, where she completed a full internship in two different middle schools in the Boston Public Schools. Prior to pursuing an administrative career, Mrs. Chen Fein was a mathematics teacher at Newton South High School and at the Tompkins Square Middle School, a public school in New York City.
Mrs. Chen Fein was chosen from an outstanding pool of candidates and a rigorous search process. The process began with an interview committee made up of a representative group of faculty members, identified three highly qualified finalists. The finalists were then invited to Marshall Simonds Middle School for a site visit that included meeting with parent representatives, members of the district leadership team, faculty focus groups, and student focus groups. We were fortunate to have such strong candidates throughout the entire process. Thank you to everyone who participated in this search process. Your perspectives were invaluable.
Mrs. Chen Fein will officially begin at Marshall Simonds Middle School on July 1, 2019. As the summer progresses, we will provide an opportunity for you to meet Mrs. Chen Fein. In the meantime, if you stop by the middle school over the summer, please say hello.
Before we head into the summer, we wanted to take a moment and thank the MSMS PTO for all the support that they have provided this year. We truly appreciate all that you have done this year to support our students and school. We are looking forward to the continued partnership next year.

Textbook and Library Book Return- Assistance Needed
The middle school library is in the process of collecting all materials that students have borrowed this year. Please assist your child in returning library books that have been borrowed this year. Students who still have outstanding books on the last day of school may not receive their report card until the book or payment for the lost book is received.
Throughout the school year, students are issued textbooks and other novels to be used in conjunction with the curriculum. Over the next week, teachers will be collecting books. Students who still have outstanding books on the last day of school or return books that are damaged may not receive their report card until payment for the lost/damaged book is received.
Comfort Stations- Thank You!
This year, two students advocated for an implemented a plan to provide comfort stations in three of our bathrooms. This is something that we hope to continue next year as well. Please see the message from the students who brought a piece of mind to many of our students this year.
Dear Burlington residents,
We would like to express our immense gratitude to everyone who helped us with the initiative to collect feminine products. We thank everyone who donated and helped the girls at Marshall Simonds Middle School feel more comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised at how supportive and generous the community was with donating products or money. Since we started this initiative, we were able to refill the “comfort stations” in all 3 main bathrooms for over 30 weeks. Thank you for supporting this idea and making our school a better place. Every bit helped and will help in the future.
Digital Citizenship and Social Media
Marshall Simonds Middle School is committed to partnering with families to support our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. The summer months provide additional unstructured time and more opportunities for access to social media. As we enter into the summer months, we encourage families to continue to actively monitor your child's online life, which includes having frequent, open and honest conversations about what they are sharing through social media and what is being shared with them. It is important that students understand that what they post on social media may have consequences beyond the here and now. Below, please find some resources that we have previously shared, along with a couple additional resources that you may find helpful to initiate these important conversations with your child(ren).
Marshall Simonds Middle School wants you to have a wonderful summer filled with sun, fun, and reading! Research shows that participating in summer reading boosts academic achievement and prevents a summer slump. Students entering grade 9 at Burlington High School
Burlington High School has updated its summer reading program for the 2019-2020 school year. Each student will be assigned a book (based on their top three picks from the provided list) and be placed in a group with other students and faculty members who also read that book. At the beginning of the school year, groups will meet to have a discussion on their book.
