News from Marshall Simonds Middle School- October 12, 2018
October 12, 2018
Since my earliest interactions with the students, faculty, and families of Marshall Simonds Middle School, I knew that this school was a special place! It was clear to me that our educators are passionate about middle school aged students and always placed them in the center of their work! With each passing day, their passion and professionalism is more evident and I am grateful for having the opportunity to work alongside them. Our students are amazing! It is a privilege to be a part of their lives on a daily basis and I am honored to work in a community like Burlington, with families who are willing to partner with the us to support the social, emotional, and academic development of our students!
At the beginning of the school year and through September, our faculty and staff began a process to identify our core values; the traits that we felt important to communicate, develop, and celebrate with our students. In the coming days and weeks, we will be sharing our core values with our students and working with them to define what it means to have MSMS PRIDE!
Later this month, we will be involving our students in choosing a mascot and creating a logo for our school that helps show our PRIDE!

Mr. Murphy and I are excited to host our first Coffee Hour this year! The purpose of the Coffee Hour is to provide a forum for two way communication between families and the administration. These regular informal meetings will provide us invaluable feedback about what makes Marshall Simonds great and will assist us in identifying opportunities for growth. The Coffee Hour will take place in the Learning Commons.
School Picture Retake Day - Friday, October 26, 2018
We are expecting that we will get student photos this coming week. Students who were absent on the original picture day or students who were not happy with their picture packages will have the opportunity to retake pictures on October 26, 2018. If you are having your child retake the picture, be sure your child has the original picture package with them on October 26th.
Digital Citizenship and Social Media
Marshall Simonds Middle School is committed to partnering with families to support our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. It is important that the school and families work together to support our students’ respectful use of social media. Often times, incidents of unkind behavior through social media occurs outside of the school day and yet can have a significant impact on the school environments. As we enter into the school year, we want encourage you to actively monitor your child's online life, which includes having frequent, open and honest conversations about what they are sharing through social media and what is being shared with them. It is important that students understand that what they post on social media may have consequences beyond the here and now. Below, please find some resources that we have compiled that you may find helpful to initiate these important conversations with your child(ren).
Morning Drop-off and Afternoon Pick-up
Now that the school year is in full swing, we wanted to remind everyone of our drop-off and pick-up procedures. Families who are dropping their child off, should use the drop-off loop at Peach Orchard Road. Please make sure that you are pulling all the way forward in the loop before dropping off your child. Students should not arrive to school before 7:15 am, as there is no guarantee that adequate supervision will be in place. Students who arrive past 7:35 am, will be marked tardy and should be dropped off at the main entrance. We are noticing on “bad weather” mornings, that there is an increase in traffic volume. In order to get to school on time and reduce the morning traffic volume, students are encouraged to ride their assigned bus, rain or shine, in the mornings.
In the afternoon, we ask that you form a single lane around the perimeter of the back parking lot. The bus loop in the front of the school is closed to families in the morning and the afternoon for buses. Please always exercise caution, patience, and model respectful behavior for our students.
The Marshall Simonds Middle School Parent Teacher Organization is an incredible resource that supports the students and teachers of MSMS! The MSMS PTO relies solely on the donations of our families to support programming, including transportation for field trips, in-school performances, and funding for the end of the year activities for our 8th grade students. If you have not already made your tax-deductible donation, please visit the MSMS PTO Blog at https://msmsburlpto.wordpress.com/pto-donations/. Thank you for your continued support!
MSMS PTO- Next Meeting, Thursday, November 8, 2018

You may have seen the white textile boxes located at each of the schools in Burlington. These boxes are part of the Bay State Textiles program that focuses on spreading awareness and seeks to educate the public about the problem of unwanted textiles. There is no cost to the program and Bay State Textiles handles all of the logistics. When you drop your unwanted textiles in any of the boxes (MSMS’s box is down the hill by the football field), that school receives a financial donation from the company. A list of textiles that will be accepted can be found here baystatetextiles.com. Please make MSMS your destination for donating unwanted textiles! Here is Bay State's latest newsletter.
We are excited to continue to offer students a late bus two days a week. The late bus can be used by students who have stayed for after school activities, such as staying for extra help with a teacher or participating in an extracurricular program or club. This year, late buses will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The buses will leave the middle school between 3:10 pm and 3:15 pm and depending on the number of students riding the bus, they may take up to an hour to complete their respective routes. Just a reminder that students should be staying with a teacher or participating in an organized after school activity when staying at school after dismissal.
