Thank you!

This week, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the families of Burlington.  On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of Marshall Simonds Middle School, we want to thank you for the daily treats, the make your own sundae bar, and lunch on Friday!   A big thank you to the MSMS PTO for organizing this week’s acts of appreciation. We were truly touched by your kindness!

 

School Safety

School safety is always our top priority.  We regularly practice our emergency response procedures, which helps us to identify continued opportunities for improvement.  We had intended on conducting a drill this week and in light of the tragedy in Colorado, we made the decision to postpone the drill.  It is our intention to conduct at least one more emergency protocol drill prior to the end of the school year.

 

Course Selection Letters

Recently, letters with information about next year’s scheduling process were sent to parents/guardians through a direct email.  If you have not already done so, please complete the online form to indicate your child’s course preferences for next year. We have extended the due date until Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

Attention 8th Grade Students

It is time to place your order for the Class of 2023 yearbook.  The cost of the yearbook is $16.00. Please turn cash or checks into homeroom teachers by Monday, May 13.  

 

MCAS

The next round of MCAS testing is scheduled to begin next week.  All students will be taking the Mathematics MCAS and students in grade 8 will take the Science, Technology, and Engineering assessment.  

The assessment window is determined by the state and individual schools have the ability to schedule within each window of time.  There are a number of factors that go into determining the testing dates and we do our best to provide a testing schedule that best meets the needs of students.  Below, please find the 2019 MCAS testing schedule for Marshall Simonds Middle School. Please keep these dates in mind as student absences during this time are particularly disruptive.

Mathematics, grades 6-8

Tuesday, May 14th and Wednesday, May 15th

Science, Technology, and Engineering, grade 8

Monday, May 20th and Tuesday, May 21st

 

Preparing for MCAS

While the MCAS is not a test that you can study for, there are a few things that you can do to help your child be prepared next week.   

 

  • Come to school well rested and on time

  • Eat a well balanced breakfast

  • Bring a book to read if you finish before the session is done

  • Demonstrate MSMS PRIDE, especially perseverance and integrity

Our students have been working hard all year!  Families and students are invited to view some of the work that they have completed this year and engage in some activities that showcase the important skills that they have learned over the year.

News from the School Nurse, Mrs. McGillivary

The nicer weather is here and the seasonal allergy and asthma issues are in full force.

 

To enable the Nurse’s office to properly service your children, please make sure we have your child’s appropriate medications available. If your child has a Respiratory Action Plan completed by you and physician, we have must have their original medication container with the prescription label indicating the child’s name, prescription number, date filled, physician’s name, medication name, and directions for use. All medications must be up-to-date (Not Expired).   

 

Please note, the BPS Nurse’s offices do not have seasonal allergy medications in stock, therefore, it is imperative for those students that require these medications that they be administered at home.

 

Your child’s health and safety is always our priority.

 

Distance Learning

The District is currently conducting a Distance Learning Pilot.    Please click here for the latest communication from The Burlington Public School’s Distance Learning Committee.

 

Talent Show

Planning for the End of the Year Talent Show is underway!  Any interested student (preference will be given to grade 8 students) who would like to audition for the Talent Show can sign up for an audition during activity block.  Please see the flyer that has been posted throughout the building for more information.

Pie Day- Save the Date, June 15, 2019

This year, the PTO and the Student Council have partnered to plan an exciting community event!  More detailed information will be shared soon! We are also looking for volunteers to help in planning and on the day of the event.   Please let us know if you would be interested in helping out!

 

We are looking for donations for the raffle table at Pie Day!  The Student Council representatives have identified different themes, by team.  Please see the flyer for your child’s team’s theme and consider sending in a donation.  Thank you for your support.
