News from Marshall Simonds Middle School

The countdown is on! The entire faculty of Marshall Simonds Middle School is ready to enthusiastically welcome our students back to school on Tuesday, September 4, 2018!  Please read through this email, as it contains information pertaining to the beginning of the school year.

Welcome Night- Wednesday, August 29, 2018
We are so impressed with the number of grade 8 students who have volunteered to welcome and assist students on Wednesday!  We are excited to provide all students and their families the opportunity to visit the building on Wednesday, August 29th. The hope is that providing students the chance to see where their classrooms, the cafeteria, the learning commons, the gymnasium, and the auditorium are located will reduce some of the anxiety a student may be feeling about coming back to school.  I know Mr. Murphy and I are looking forward to meeting some of our students before the first day of school! The building will be open to students and parents from 5:00-6:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., we invite our grade 6 families and any family new to MSMS to the auditorium for an introductory presentation. Students are welcome to attend with their families.

News from the School Nurse- Medication Drop-off
The MSMS nurse will be available for medication drop offs on Monday, August 27th, from 8 am - 3 pm and Wednesday, August 29th from 5 - 7 pm.   The appropriate medication plan(s) need to be completed and all medications must be in their original medication container with the prescription label indicating the child’s name, prescription number, date filled, physician’s name, medication name, and directions for use. Non-prescription medications must be in their original containers, with directions for use.  All Medications must be up-to-date (Not Expired). Additionally, all epipens must have both epipens that were dispensed in the prescription box. Only the school nurse can accept medication.   If your child self carries medications, this needs to have the approval from the school nurse and you must have a second set of emergency medication in the nurse's office.  Below, please find the BPS district policies and regulatory requirements for nurses to administer medications to your children in a safe manner and to keep your children safe while under our care.

If you need the updated Medication plans, please refer to the Health Services section of the Burlington Public Schools website or see the attachments.  If you need to have a meeting with the nurse to discuss your child's specific medical needs, please call the nurse’s office to make an appointment at 781-270-1779 or email Barbara Conley, the Head of Nursing Services, at bconley@bpsk12.org.

Guidance Structure
Guidance counselors play an important role in supporting students in middle school.  Below, is a listing of the guidance counselor assignments for the 2018-2019 school year.

Morning Drop-off and Afternoon Pick-up
In order to get to school on time and reduce the morning traffic volume, students are encouraged to ride their assigned bus in the mornings.  Families who are dropping their child off, should use the drop-off loop at Peach Orchard Road. Students should not arrive to school before 7:15 am, as there is no guarantee that adequate supervision will be in place.  Students who arrive past 7:35 am, will be marked tardy and should be dropped off at the main entrance. In the afternoon, we ask that you form a single lane around the perimeter of the parking lot. The bus loop in the front of the school is closed to families in the morning and the afternoon for buses.  Please always exercise caution, patience, and model respectful behavior for our students.

Effective home-school communication is one of the most important components of a strong partnership and one of the most difficult to achieve.  

About every two weeks, we will be sending out an update that will include important information, including upcoming dates, events, and happenings.  This update will initially be sent through email and once the new website is completed, will be posted through the new and improved blog.

Marshall Simonds Middle School is also on Twitter!  Please follow at @MSMSBPS. It is our hope provide a window into our students’ school day and tweet timely reminders.  As the year gets underway, we will explore other social media platforms that may help us stay connected to the greater community.

Principal Coffee Hours
Mr. Murphy and I will be holding regular Coffee Hours to provide a forum for two way communication.  These regular informal meetings will provide us invaluable feedback about what makes Marshall Simonds great and will assist us in identifying opportunities for growth.   We will hold our first, monthly coffee hour in October. We understand that schedules are busy and want to do our best to schedule events that work best for most families.  Please complete this quick survey to help us identify the days of the week and times that would work best for most families.  Despite our best efforts, we know that we will not be able to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules and we ask for your patience if the time that is selected does not work for your family.

Marshall Simonds Middle School PTO

Textile Bins
You may have seen the white textile boxes located at each of the schools in Burlington.  These boxes are part of the Bay State Textiles program that focuses on spreading awareness and seeks to educate the public about the problem of unwanted textiles. There is no cost to the program and Bay State Textiles handles all of the logistics.  When you drop your unwanted textiles in any of the boxes (MSMS’s box is down the hill by the football field), that school receives a financial donation from the company. A list of textiles that will be accepted can be found here baystatetextiles.com.  Please make MSMS your destination for donating unwanted textiles!

Back to School Nights- Save the Dates
We are excited to provide families the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and learn about the curricular program that Marshall Simonds Middle School offers all students.  As has been the practice, we have scheduled two Back to School Nights for early this fall. Please mark your calendars. More information about the format of the evening will be provided as we approach the dates.

Picture Day
Picture day has been scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, September 12, 2018.  More information about ordering will be shared with families once it is received from the photography  company, Geskus.

School Calendar and School Hours
Regular and punctual school attendance is essential for school success.  While school work due to absence can be made up, it is difficult to replicate the learning experiences in the classroom  The Burlington Public Schools School Committee has established an attendance procedure policy (File #JH) that states, “The administration and faculty of Burlington Public Schools believe that attendance by students at school is vitally important to a successful education”.

The Marshall Simonds Middle School day begins at 7:35 am and ends at 1:55 pm.  Students are expected to be in homeroom by 7:35 am. Students who are not in homeroom by 7:35 am are considered tardy and must sign in at the main office to receive a pass to class. Students who are to be dismissed from school should bring a note signed by a parent or guardian to the office prior to the start of school and will receive a dismissal slip.   Students must be picked up from the main office by a parent, guardian, or other adult who has been given permission, in writing, to pick up the child.

In the event that a student is absent for school, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to inform the school of the absence.  Parents/guardians must call (781) 270-1781 ext. 1 prior to 8:00 a.m. to report a student absence. In the event that the school is not contacted by the parent/guardian about a child’s absence, the school will contact the family to confirm the child’s absence.
