Dear Marshall Simonds Middle School Community,

Greetings!  I hope that this message finds you well and that you are enjoying the summer.  I am honored to have been selected to become the next principal of Marshall Simonds Middle School, and I am looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that Burlington Public Schools are known for.

Middle school can be both an exciting and tumultuous time in a child’s development.  The world is constantly changing and we, parents and educators, have the awesome responsibility of preparing our students, your child, to have the skills necessary to become contributing members of a global community. No two children are the same and neither is their development.  In order to completely support each child in developing their full potential, it is imperative that all members of the school community, parents, guardians, and educators, work together to support the whole child. The foundation for this partnership is trust, which begins with effective communication.

As we approach the beginning of the school year, you can expect regular email communication from me.  This communication will include important information, including upcoming dates and events and can be expected about every two weeks.  In addition to regular email communication, we are working with the district to update the website to be a better resource for the community.  We will share updates with you as the website is developed. Marshall Simonds Middle School is also on Twitter! Please follow at @MSMSBPS. It is our hope provide a window into our students’ school day and tweet timely reminders.  While technology can be an effective tool for communication, nothing replaces the power of a personal connection. I, along with Mr. Murphy, our new assistant principal, will be holding regular Parent Coffee Hours. Parent Coffee Hours will provide a forum for two way communication between home and school.  These regular informal meetings will provide us invaluable feedback about what makes Marshall Simonds great and will assist us in identifying opportunities for growth. Finally, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or Mr. Murphy.

This past spring, I had the opportunity to attend several school events and to meet with the dedicated members of the Marshall Simonds Middle School faculty.  From my first visit to the school, it was clear that Marshall Simonds Middle School is a special place because of the people; the students, faculty, and community.  As the new school year with the new administrative team approaches, it is understandable that some members of our community, including our students, may be apprehensive about potential changes.  While some adjustments to the daily operations of the school will be noticable, it is not our intention to implement any larger scale change until a need has been identified and a process has been established. Our first priority is to establish relationships with all members of the school community, especially our students.  In the first days of school, we will be meeting with individual grade levels of students to introduce ourselves and to communicate our expectations.

I am looking forward to a great year of learning at Marshall Simonds Middle School!  We will begin our regular bi-weekly communication the week of August 13, 2018.

Enjoy the summer!
