MSMS News - August 9, 2021

MSMS_ News Post LogoWe hope that this message finds you well and that you are enjoying the summer! After last year, it is safe to say that we all needed some down time in order to rest and recharge. While we are not wishing the final four weeks of summer away, we are looking forward to welcoming all our students back to building on the first day of school, Monday, Aug 30, 2021.

The uptick in cases of Covid-19, nationally and locally, is concerning. Last week, the district sent a communication to families regarding the requirement for all members of the school community to wear masks in school buildings, regardless of vaccination status. As of the writing of this email, we have not yet received any other guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education or the Department of Public Health. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and communicate any necessary adjustments in as timely a manner as possible.

Below is our mid-summer update. You can expect our next update in about a week. During the school year, news is shared about every two weeks through email and on our school website.

WEB Orientation, Save the Date Wednesday, August 25, 2021

We are excited for our third annual WEB Orientation Day. WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) is a program with the sole purpose of helping incoming students feel more comfortable as they transition to middle school. The WEB Program consists of an in-person activity based orientation day that welcomes incoming 6th grade students to the middle school, while providing them with important information about the school. Incoming 6th grade students will be assigned an 8th grade WEB Leader who will continue to support the 6th grade students throughout the year. This WEB Leader is a responsible older student who was selected from a large pool of applicants, has met the qualifications of being a good role model, is a positive leader in our school, and has participated in training. As we get closer to the event, we will follow up with Grade 6 families with more specific information.

We would like to thank the Burlington Education Foundation for their generous support in bringing WEB to Marshall Simonds Middle School.

Scheduling Update
Scheduling and placement is a complex process. We have spent much of the summer months working developing the schedule and we are getting closer to finalizing the schedule. When this process is complete, we will send a letter with their team/homeroom placement, their music selection, and their World Language choice through the USPS. We will also post this information on the family portal. This information should be available on or before August 16, 2021.

Student Management System/Family Portal Aspen
Each BPS Family has an Aspen Family Portal Account. The accounts are automatically created when families first register their child for school.

The URL for the Aspen Family Portal is

If you have trouble accessing Aspen, do not know your account information or need your account reset, please send a message to the Student Information Office at [email protected]. Please make sure to include your child’s name, school, and grade level in your message.

School Counseling Newsletter
While many students and families look forward to the end of the year, the unstructured summer days can be a source of stress and anxiety for some. Here is a link to the MSMS Counseling Department website and to the summer newsletter.

Burlington Public Schools recognizes that returning to school this fall will be exciting for many students, while other students will be experiencing feelings of anxiety and fear. News from the Nurses’ Office

Incoming 7th-grade Physical Exams

Thank you to everyone that has already turned in a copy of their child’s most recent physical exam with immunizations to the school nurses.

Here you will find the letter that had been previously mailed home in early March 2021 requesting this documentation. Tdap and Meningococcal immunizations (Men B not accepted) are required for students entering 7th grade. Please know that the requirements are set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Education and Secondary Education. If your child has not yet had their physical exam or been given the required immunizations please contact your child’s provider if you have not already done so.

If your child’s appointment dated between January 1, 2020 and September 1, 2021 has already happened please email the physical exam and immunizations to the MSMS nurses at your earliest convenience to either Leigh McGillivray at [email protected] or Olive Schulze at [email protected]. Many practices have on-line portals, which allow you to print proof of physical exams (not the visit summary) with a doctor’s signature and immunizations without even having to contact the office. Your doctor’s office may also fax them to 781-270-1696.
