The 1st Annual MATHachusetts Middle School League Tournament was held on Saturday, May 18th at Marshall Simonds Middle School in Burlington, MA, from 8:30 A.M. to 12 P.M. Seventh and eighth grade students from Burlington, Tewksbury, Lowell, and Woburn competed face-to-face in an individual and team event.
The individual event was comprised of ten extremely challenging algebra problems. We held a tie-breaker to determine our 3rd place winner. Our overall winner for the day was Johnny Baker from John W. Wynn Middle School in Tewksbury. William Jappe and Jonathan Brand from Marshall Simonds in Burlington took 2nd and 3rd place.
The team event was comprised of ten problems from any content area in 7th and 8th grade mathematics. Students worked cooperatively in teams of five to find solutions. First place went to Marshall Simonds Middle School Team #1, which included William Jappe, Rithikh Prakash, Sowndaryan Jayaprakash Anand, Nathanael Chao, and Anthony Saliba (pictured below). Second place went to Marshall Simonds Middle School Team #2, which included Jonathan Brand, Jaclyn Brand, Megan Ohol, Henry Morin, and Inesh Parikh (pictured below). In third place was Joyce Middle School Team #2, from Woburn, which included Kellen Rice, Jack Weber, Tafat Boudif, Michelle Laferriere, and Vaishnavi Harish.
